The person who leads a group of people to attain certain goals is called a leader. Every big success story in business is the story of a person who had leadership qualities and knew to lead a team or group of expert individuals to achieve goals. Progress of a company or success of a business venture depends on its leadership. Without a great leader at the helm the might of a company starts diminishing. A leader can make or mar a business empire. Great leaders are not born; they acquire greatness with total commitment to their purpose and by getting the support of others. Any sensible person can become a dynamic leader by cultivating a few qualities with diligence and persistence. Art of influencing his team for great action is the hallmark of any great leader. Great Sam Walton (Wal Mart fame), who is considered one of the best business leaders in the world, said ‘Outstanding leaders go out of the way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish.’
1. Determine Your Path
According to great leader Charles De Gaulle ‘nothing great will ever be achieved without great men, and men are great only if they are determined to be so.’ To move determinedly towards your path to successful leadership you need to decide what actually your goal is. To which direction you have to lead your people. Write your goals on a small paper so that your vision about your future becomes clear.
2. Choose a Right Team
Donald Trump (the biggest real estate tycoon today) suggests that to get big success in business or become a great business leader it is necessary to find people who really suit your businesses style and you will have fewer problems to deal with as time goes on. And for it sometimes this can mean choosing attitude over experience and credentials. The cream of your business runners must be creative as such people rarely need to be motivated. They have an inner drive which keeps them on the edge, which is precisely what is needed to be successful and remain successful. A bad team can throw your business plans in jeopardy. It is foolish to lead such a team. You won’t read anywhere.
3. Pump Up Enthusiasm
Only an enthusiastic person can motivate others to move ahead with zeal. Unlimited enthusiasm can give you unlimited success when it is focused and directed towards the aim of your life. Try to keep yourself enthusiastic whenever you say or do something. When you are dedicated towards a cause and charged with emotions others catch your enthusiasm and it is the best motivation for others. The next step to motivate others is to tell them what they will gain when the team gets success.
4. Bind Yourself in Discipline
The basic law of the development of this universe is Discipline. Without it there would not have been any year, month or day. There would not have been any earth or planet. The whole universe has been working in great discipline for billions of years. This is also one of the laws of successful leadership in business. A good leader is always disciplined and punctual. If a manager or boss always reaches in officer late the subordinates will develop the same habit. They will lose enthusiasm for hard work, but the worst loser will be the leader and the company. According to Harry Emerson: ‘No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No stream or gas drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined.’
5. Know Your Field
Who will be more informed about IT field than Bill Gates and it is one of his secrets of success. He always keeps himself well-informed. Your people won’t accept your leadership whole-heartedly if they know you don’t even have adequate information of the path you are leading them on. They will suspect your ability to analyze the facts and launch an operation. Do your best to get as many facts from as many sources as possible. If your have information power on your side you can easily defeat a more powerful enemy or competitor. Right information has always proved the biggest power and success tool of most of the great business men and women.
6. Learn to be Charismatic
The word charisma is often used to describe ability to charm or influence people. It refers especially to a quality in certain people who easily draw the attention and admiration (or even hatred if the charisma is negative) of others due to a "magnetic" quality of personality and appearance. Charismatic individuals generally project unusual confidence, calmness, assertiveness, and focus, along with superb communication skills. To the early Greeks, charisma was said to be "a divine gift" or "gift of grace," implying that this quality was an inborn trait; although now, many believe it can be taught or learned despite the inability to define or understand it. (Wikipedia).
Actually charisma is another name for attractive personality and it can be developed with determination and hard work. Many leaders get such a nice upbringing and atmosphere from their parents that they get a good personality without making much efforts to develop it themselves. But there are others who work very hard to develop it. To make your personality charismatic you need to take the following steps: 1.Have immovable self-confidence in you, 2.Show to others that you know everything, 3.Surround yourself with capable persons, 4.Maintain an air of power with the help of money and material, 5.Give extra care to dress sense, 6.Be near the people and help them to solve problems, 7. Keep yourself fit and healthy.
7. Keep Your Heart Covered
Be somewhat mysterious. Keep your problems to yourself. Never show the scars or injuries of your heart to your followers. They are not there to solve your personal problems but to take your help in solving their problems. If they are kept listening to your heart-burns and solving your day to day problems you will lose your leadership chair soon.
8. Manage Your Emotions
There is a constant uprising of various emotions in a human being. Outbursts without thought not only land you in trouble now and then but erode the charisma of your leadership. Good leaders learn to manage their emotions and develop sophistication in behaviour. Anger is the most dangerous emotion one need to manage. In a fit of anger people committed crimes, killed others, lost friends, and scuttled great business deals. One of the greatest international saints Gautam Buddha said: ‘Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.’. A leader must be aggressive to get victory but if you are unable to exercise self-control it may become anger. Anger repels people as well as victory. Nobody wants to follow a person who shows angry tantrums at the drop of a hat. By willingness and constant practice you can learn the art of managing your anger. The best method to manage your anger is to play an aggressive game or do a work in which you can use can pour your aggressive energy. Regular meditation also soothes your aggressive feelings.
9. You Must Have Something to Give
People have a hope that they will gain something from their leader. This is the reason they follow him. A leader is a person who is capable enough to lead others to achieve a certain objective. A leader successfully convinces the people that he is the only one who can help them to solve their problems and lead them to success. Tell them again and again what they can achieve or get under your leadership.
10. Love and Appreciate Your Staff
‘The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.’ These are the words of world-famous psychologist William James. If you often admire the people who work for you they will love your more. Every person thinks that he is wise and does certain things in life which must be admired. Criticism dissuades and repels the people. Hard criticism may make them afraid for some time but secretly they start plotting against you and damage your winning potential.
It is quite true what the world renowned leader Woodrow Wilson once said: ‘the ear of the leader must ring with the voices of the people.’ Any person however capable will lose his leadership sooner or later if he ignores his people. He must listen carefully and patiently what his people want to say or express. Dissatisfaction or resentment among people or team members must be sorted out as soon as possible. UK Billionaire Richard Branson proudly says that his priority is to be staff-friendly. If your staff gets your love and appreciation it will be happily motivated and keep the customers happy too.
11. Develop Drive for Improvement
Outstanding leaders help their people to achieve to the best of their abilities. They are always aware of the competition and devote a considerable amount of time in improving all the departments of the business venture. Their mind is actually a store house of new ideas. With the help of the mastermind group (the core team) they arrange training to develop the talent of their workers or employees, they think on how to improve the working environment, they motivate their engineers to innovate and implement new technology, they improve the designing and the quality of the products. In brief a drive for constant improvement is a major key to success in modern world of tough competition. And a leader needs to develop a passion for it.
12. Follow Principle of Sincerity
A good leader never works for personal promotion or benefits. He is committed sincerely to the organization and its people. He sets principles and ethical values for the company and harnesses himself as a role model. Providing a corruption free atmosphere and always inculcating a feeling of sincerity in others is an absolute necessity for a leader. If a leader is selfish, works for his own advancement and keep an eye on making money at any cost soon becomes a hot brick that nobody wants to touch. It is an era of democracies so people rarely like a person having total command and control or a dictator. Dictatorial style of leadership has become a thing of the past. Now people are wise and talented. They too want to share the responsibility for development. Therefore a leader must develop a culture of sincere collaborations too.
